The open-top gift basket is a corrugated cardboard tray with integrated die-cut handles, designed to replace traditional wicker or wire gift baskets at a fraction of the cost and shipping weight. Unlike rigid baskets that ship assembled (wasting 80% of truck space), corrugated trays ship flat – 100 trays stack in the space of 5–10 assembled baskets.

Die-Cut Handles Integrated Into the Cardboard

The defining characteristic of this gift basket is the die-cut handles – handle openings cut directly into the corrugated cardboard during the manufacturing process. The handles are typically located on the two shorter side walls (end handles) or on the two longer side walls (side handles).

Corrugated Cardboard Grades

Corrugated cardboard consists of three layers: two flat liners (outside) and a fluted medium (inside). The flute type determines strength, thickness, and appearance. For open-top gift baskets, the most common flute types are: B-flute (2.5–3 mm thick, 48–50 flutes per foot – most common for gift baskets. Offers good strength-to-weight ratio, smooth printing surface on the liners, and clean die-cuts. B-flute baskets are rigid enough to stand upright but lightweight. E-flute (1.5–2 mm thick, 90–95 flutes per foot – thinner, smoother, better for high-quality printing. E-flute is lighter but less rigid – best for lightweight gifts: chocolates, teas, small spa items); and double-wall (two fluted layers laminated together – BC-flute, BE-flute – 5–7 mm thick, very rigid, holds heavier loads (15+ kg / 33+ lbs) – best for wine bottles, multiple heavy jars, tool sets.
